Yesterday I spoke about a new song I discovered recently thanks to the Spotify algorithm and the awesome reminder it provided me with in the lyrics.

As a reminder: “I’m so reborn. I’m moving forward, keep moving forward.”

I also mentioned how when I find a song I really like, I tend to end up listening to it on repeat, sometimes for the entire day.

Today I wanted to take a closer look at the other side of that same coin.

More specifically, there are things we’re consuming which are subconsciously feeding us with false narratives.

Let’s continue using Spotify for an example.

There were a couple of songs I really liked but decided to stop listening to after I paid closer attention to the lyrics.

One of them was “Young, Dumb, Broke” and the other was “All Time Low”.

Now I don’t know about you, but I definitely don’t want to be sending those kinds of messages to my subconscious mind on repeat!

And in case you’re wondering, yes, this does have an impact on our thoughts.

When we listen to something over and over again, and especially if we repeat it ourselves, it becomes like a mantra which anchors in the message.

This goes for more than just music, too. Everything we consume, from the shows we watch, to the books we read, and the people we follow, all contribute to the stories we tell ourselves and the lens through which we view the world.

As for me? Well, I’d prefer not to associate with young, dumb, or broke, thanks!

The next time you find yourself listening, watching or even singing something, take a little step back and ask yourself if it’s the kind of instruction you’d wanna send to your personal operating system on purpose.

And remember, all of these amazing resources are just tools to be used however we want. If you’re not happy with the narrative, you get to skip the track.
