Whenever we think about making a big change in our lives, we immediately think about the commitment it will take to get there.

If you want to get in better shape, you need to commit to cleaning up your diet and moving your body.

If you want to be in a relationship, you need to commit to speaking to that cute guy or girl and putting yourself in more social situations.

If you want to make a bigger impact in the world, you need to commit to finding and pursuing the thing that makes you come alive and then sharing it with others.

Indeed, this point came up when I spoke to ‘Rockstar’ again last week. (Remember her?)

But what we tend to forget, and what I shared with her, is that every decision you make is a commitment, including, wait for it, the decision to stay where you are.

Yes, you read that correctly.

If you are unhappy with your current situation but not taking any action to move towards what you want, then you have made a commitment, whether knowingly or unknowingly, to maintain your current reality.

According to a quick dictionary search, to be committed means to be dedicated to an activity. It would follow, then, that being committed to inactivity is also a commitment.

Going back to our earlier examples…

If you want to get in better shape but don’t want to exercise, you are committed to staying comfortable by eating whatever you want and not pushing your body.

If you want to be in a relationship but are too worried about what people think of you, you are committed to protecting your self-esteem and avoiding rejection.

If you want to make a bigger impact in the world but don’t want to quit your day job (or make time for a side gig), then you are committed to staying in your comfort zone.

What you will notice in all of these examples is that it’s just the initial period of getting into momentum that’s uncomfortable. Once that kicks in, your new commitment becomes far easier to stick to.

If you want to change your current reality, don’t talk yourself out of taking that tiny first step because of the commitment it’s going to take to achieve it. Staying where you currently are is just as much of a commitment.

You can either commit to comfort, or you can commit to growth. The choice is yours.
